Hello internet,
I've inherited an old-ish computer from my dad and I'm curious how much more powerful I can go with a GPU on my system. I realize the best option is probably building a new PC but I'm not in a huge hurry to do that.

System Specs:
-CPU: Core 2 Duo e4700 2.60 GHz
-RAM: 4gb
-PSU: 650w
-GPU: NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GS

My budget for a GPU would hopefully be under 100, but if there is something that would transplant well in the future and improve my system currently I would be open to something like that as well if it were more expensive.

Thanks for the advice!

Mobo is Intel D945GCCR

Did you have any bottleneck issues with the GTX650?

I've yet to receive it.
Seems it's the same chipset -- 945GC Express.
I'm not really confident if you should get a AMD card -- that is why I didn't. I don't know if the 650 will work, but I'm hopeful.
Others will be able to help better I'm afraid.

Ah interesting well if you remember you should let me know how it goes just in case this thread doesn't go anywhere. I hope it works out for you though!

Thanks. Thing is that when I was myself looking at the 6670, I got the sapphire that was PCI-E 2.0 (compatible with 1.1 of my-our mobo) and HIS that was PCI-E 2.1(not compatible).
The 2.1 is not compatible due to some power modifications.
However the GTX650 is 3.0 which is compatible.

Thanks. Fingers crossed..

Just to clarify, pci-e 2.1 is not compatible on our mobo but 3.0 is?

Clarification. All 6670s are PCI-E 2.1 and if it said 2.0 is was mislabeled.
PCI-E 2.1 or higher may or may not work with a PCI-E 1.x chipset. The 9xx chipset it could go either way
G31 and G41 fixed the problem and all cards should work with those

Sorry I'm a novice and I don't know what G31 or G41 are. Could you elaborate just a little?

If you could let me know if it works out for you that would be awesome! I posted this same question to /r/buildapc and was recommended the same card.

G31 and G41 were newer 775 chipsets as opposed to the 9xx series
