GPU:Sapphire R9 290x Tri X
PSU: Corsair CX750

I would appreciate guidelines for a safe overclocking range for my GPU with only air cooling.

Solution
download msi afterburner
keep the voltages at stock until you personally become more comfortable with overclocking

now slide the core clock slider up by 10mhz at a time, retesting with a gpu stress test after each increase until you get a driver crash. when this happens, dial the clock speed back by 20mhz

repeat the same process afterwards with the memory clock. this is considered a safe overclock, and upping the voltages will allow for higher overclocks, but will also increase temps and wear on the card. Keep an eye on both gpu temps and cpu temps, as the tri-x will increase case temps rather than blowing the air out the back
