So the title basically says it all I am wanting to buy or build a server to turn into a dedicated server for several of my games for friends and I. I have looked into the Dell PowerEdge 2850 Server and a few others and they all seem to be either single core with decent speed and slow ram or dual core and slow speed and slow ram.

I am wanting to be able to run multiple servers, Arma 3, Contagion, Starbound, Risk of Rain, etc most of the games are rather lightweight with the exception of Arma 3, but I want to be able to smoothly host all of these, preferably simultaneously even tho we will likely only be on one of the servers at a time. I'm hoping to keep the build as much under a $1000 as possible but I don't want to be half-assing it either because with computers you get what you pay for so I don't want to be spending money and get horrible performance and have to spend more.

If anyone could give me some advice as to what would be a good build I would be most appreciative. And I'm sure the question of how many people and internet connection will be asked. Most likely never more than 15-20 people if ever that many and (107MB Down & 5MB UP).

Thank you for taking time to read this.

If you want to run them all at once you need a monster machine. For one at a time a 4770k+16GB RAM+~2TB HDD (maybe in raid 1) will blow it all away. Even my measly i7 870 with 8GB ram can host and play on an MC server with 4 people.

Yea I had created a build the other day for a desktop based server with some powerful parts like an I7 4820k and 16GB of RAM etc etc but it came out to being around $1400, and I was hoping I could build an actual server type build dual cpu's etc that would be as effective for possibly cheaper.

Many xeons are cheaper than their desktop counterparts. Also, they are the only branch that can run in 2 proc systems. All of the core/Pentium/celeron lines can not.

Right but what I am trying to figure out is which is the best route to take for my situation as I do not fully understand how server cpu's with lower ram and speed compare to desktop cpus with much higher cores, speed and faster ram. Being as I want to keep these servers running 24/7.
