Currently running:

i3 2120 (3.3 dual core)
Radeon 6670 (definitely need new)
4G RAM (I think DDR3)

Spent 300 dollars to put this thing together a couple years ago, but getting extremely poor frame rates in multiplayer games lately.

I know I need a GPU upgrade, but I'm hoping I can do just a GPU/4G RAM upgrade and stick with my current processor. Any ideas?

It seems like the best bang for my buck is a HD7850/7870 or an R7 variant. I'm wondering if upgrading to something like that, 8G of RAM will give me a signifcant boost without bottlenecking on the CPU. Any thoughts? Thanks all.

Yeah, a new GPU and another 4GB of RAM should give it another lease of life. Shouldn't bottleneck, but multiplayer games tend to be heavy on the CPU.

Also, you can replace the CPU without needing to get a new board if your current one can be updated to support IB chips.

You're making me feel bad saying that the 6670 needs upgrading as I'm happy with mine. Sure, it won't complete with a lot of high $$ cards but.. Runs Eve Online, Diablo 3, WOW, and quite a few others very well.

The question is, is this a gaming machine or general usage/work? If gaming, then yea, you might want to do the video. I'm not familiar with the CPU. What's the MOBO?
