On another post I realize the heat and power issues of upgrading a CPU in a laptop. Mine has been working so well that after a trip to the crucial website, I thought I'd upgrade the laptop with 8Gb ram and a new SSD drive though that leaves it still with an older CPU.

It comes with an Intel i5 M450 2.40GHz CPU that provides the onboard graphics and I wondered if I could pep that up a bit with something else? Any suggestions are welcome.

hmm, you can but I wouldn't. The better CPU you put in the laptop, the more power it'll require. The last thing you want is the CPU drawing too much battery then the battery would like. That is the down side, but it is done if the CPU is supported on the chipset of your HP Laptop. Heat can be an issue but not always. Just something to consider before going through with it.

Wise words. I've already substituted the 5200mAh battery with a 8800mAh one. The CPU upgrade is not essential, so long as the SSD will give the required increase in startup and application speed. I was just considering the CPU upgrade as other slightly faster units aren't overly expensive - now.

if a new CPU isn't expensive and is compatible with your socket, and you have the battery grunt so you can and will be worth it. The SSD Will noticeably increase your speed on boot and loading so that'll be a worthwhile upgrade. I have an SSD (desktop though) and I can say it's insanely fast and I can boot my PC in 9 seconds, defiantly worth it.
