I have an asus p8z77 pro with an i5-3570k cooled by a noctua d-14. There are two 4gb corsair vengeance sticks attached. My psu is a corsair cx600m. All that is plugged in is the 24 pin atx and 8 pin 12 v and the noctua fans. After installing the aforementioned hardware I decided to test the power to the mobo. All that turns on is the green standby led. I've checked connections. Did I miss something?

Might sound incredibly simple/silly but: Have you connected a power button to the onboard fornat panel header and pressed it?

Also, combining memory kits as you have is not a good idea. The memory my not be fully stable when you combine kits because the timings the kit is programmed with only take a single kit into account. The density of kits affects their ability to remain stable, which is why combining them is not advised unless one is versed in making adjustments in UEFI.

Thanks for the link. I've been looking for something like that but couldn't find it. I think I should be able to work with that. Thanks again. I honestly know very little about building computers, all I have is the Internet and vague manuals. I appreciate it.
