After upgrading avast antivirus on my desktop and laptop I'm not able to place orders on any websites such as JC Penneys or use my online banking account. Any ideas on what is going on? I've used Avast free for many years. Called Avast CS and they want $147.00 for a years subscription to help with the problem.

I would suggest uninstalling Avast and considering an alternate free option. Look at Microsoft Security Essentials or AVG. See links below:
