The Ubuntu software center has some great open source RPGs. Also just google open source RPGs for whatever platform you are running

For example, Windows...http://osswin.sourceforge.net/games.html

Edit that link above is pretty old: here are some more current ones for Linux...http://opensource.com/life/12/10/5-new-rpg-games-linux

and as usual wikipidea does most of the work for you: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_open-source_video_games

P.S. not a fan of illegal downloads either, you want free opensource is the way to go and if you like make sure to contribute

Thanks. Many people have told me to try Steam but I have no idea where to go once I go there. Could you let me know?

Thanks. I can't seem to find an option to show only free games, or even an option to sort by price.

Very simple. Move the mouse to Games and you will see a drop down menu. Free to play is the first choice.

I will point out that none of these are completely free game where there is no money involved. The type of "pay walls" varies by game. Some are pretty loose and some are pretty stringent and others can be crippling.

Pinball Arcade is listed as Free to Pay. I have on my Nexus. You get one free pinball game (referred to as tables) which is Arabian Knights. Pinball Arcade has many different tables, but you can only score so high before game play ends and it informs you that if you want to unlock the table you need to pay money. Every month one of the tables is completely free to play. You can play the game 24/7 if you wanted to, but only for one month for that particular table. I actually like Pinball Arcade and I am considering purchasing a set of tables (called Seasons) for $30 per season; specifically Season One since it has the best collection of tables.

I have only just started playing MMOs; specifically Star Trek Online (STO) because it is mostly a single player game (the campaign / story) but with MMO elements like PVP or PVE zones. The game is designed by Cryptic and based on many review it seems to have the most lax pay system of all MMOs (Star Wars The Old Republic appears to be one of the more restrictive). Many people have stated they were able to play the game absolutely for free and completed the three different story lines several times over.

I've have been playing for about a week and I would have to agree that there does not seem to be too many restrictions for free players. One "pay wall" is the 10 million Energy Credit (currency) limit imposed on Free to Play. Sound like a high cap, but the better ship / equipment can cost on the 10's of millions to a few hundred million credits. However, such things are not required to complete the storyline. But naturally elite ships / equipment can make space combat easier.

I realize that I have been going on for while about STO, but the point is really about how "wallet friendly" Cryptic games could be. If STO is not your type of game, then check out Cryptic's other game Neverwinter is based in the Dungeons and Dragons world. I have not played Neverwinter, but it might might be worth looking into.

Thanks so much jaguarskx, for your thorough reply. I'm going to check STO out.

I have to reiterate though, that I'm looking for single player RPGs in this thread. Maybe I will make another thread for multiplayer RPGs, but for now I'm kinda just searching for single player RPGs.

Free and single player rarely go together. The best free-to-play RPG I could recommend right now is Path of Exile but it is an online game. You don't have to play with others if you don't want but you do have to be online to play.

I would start scouring sales and you will be surprised how many games you can pick up for next to nothing. I usually watch GOG.com, Steam and Humble Bundle and almost never pay more than $5 for a game. I have 50+ games on Steam, 20+ on GOG and probably 30-40 more on Humble Bundle that I haven't yet linked to Steam.

Like I said, STO is mostly a single player game as long as you stick with the main storyline. You will only be interacting with other players in space / ground combat missions that are not part of the single player campaign. When flying around in space you may get the occasional message from a player asking if you want to join their fleet to which you can always decline. I think I get these types of messages about once every two hours so I don't find them to be annoying.

Missions outside of the main campaign are completely optional, some are many are single player missions, but there are also mulitplayer ones as well. If you select a mission only to find out it is a co-op mission, then simply avoid those types of missions in the future. I play a lot of the co-op space missions since when you kill you enemies they might drop equipment that can be useful either to equip on your ship or to sell for energy credits.

As stated, spending real money is completely optional. Every 10 levels you advance you get promoted to the next rank and you get a free ship upgrade. There are a total of 50 levels from Ensign to Admiral so you get 5 free ships. The single player missions will provide you equipment upgrades as part of the reward or kill drops.
