You can't perform an upgrade to move from 32 bit to 64 bit. You will need to do a re-install of windows. According to Microsoft's website:

"If you want to move from a 32-bit version of Windows to a 64-bit version of Windows 7 or vice versa, you'll need to back up your files and choose the Custom option during Windows 7 installation. Then, you'll need to restore your files and reinstall your programs."

I was implying the upgrade being a reinstall of windows from 32 to 64.

I'm changing the mboard, memory, gpu, cpu and psu, storage will remain the same (however, it was installed in 09). My old cpu runs at 32bit, while the new one will at 64.

Won't the old storage compromise the whole process as I'm assuming the OS files are stored on it?

do i take that to mean you have 2 drives.one primary for your os and a secondary for storage? as long as the primary drive has the new os it wont matter about the second drive having os files.those you can just delete.you will want to do a clean install on the primary drive so any files you need from it will have to be backed up to another location.

Will the installation overwrite the existing OS files in the primary drive during the process?
