Where are some good websites to buy custom built computers? i'm in the u.s i've read about ironside and i looked on ncix they are out of my price range which is $600-$800 but read that they can build a pc for you

More about : good places buy custom build

February 4, 2014 9:08:04 AM

what price range?

ncix has many options and doesnt seem to mark up the prices like every other custom comptuer retailer does. they have some decent solutions

(or you can just build it yourself... its easy)

Pcpartspicker.com is an excellent resource. You save quite a bit of money because it automatically finds the cheapest retailer for the component you selected. I can change the build to all come from Newegg, but it will go considerably over your $800 budget...

Building your own pc will require really only one thing from you, TIME. If you're willing to make a time investment to research every part, ask questions, and make mistakes, I GUARANTEE you will receive one of the most rewarding and satisfactory experiences of your life. (and save a fair bit of money too) I HIGHLY recommend building your own. There is so much information, tutorials, and people willing to help you a long the way. You can do it man.

Use pcpart picker (and blanket searches on newegg ex:"650W Power Supply"), generally amazon has the best prices overall. There will probably be a few of the more expensive items for better prices on newegg (or similar seller) and get those one or two items from them.

Well, the main problem with that build just like most pre-built systems is that the PSU is junk. A quality PSU is the key to a stable, long-lasting system.

Well, the PSU is slightly less junk than the other one, but it doesn't include a GPU or OS...

It's not the wattage that makes the PSU junk, it's the cheap components inside the PSU. You want to go with a quality PSU from a known good manufacturer. Seasonic and Corsair make good PSUs. At a bare minimum you need to get a PSU with active PFC and at least 80+ certification. If the computer shop doesn't understand those terms and doesn't carry a PSU with those minimum requirements then you are wasting your time there.

I recommend Windows 8.1. I only put Windows 7 in the previous builds because you said that's what you wanted. A new build should go with the newest OS IMO. Once you get over the learning curve it's actually a solid OS. I run Windows 8.1 and don't miss Windows 7.

I saw there is a way to make windows 8 look like 7 with start menu the os runs faster and would I have to purchase windows 8.1? Or it's already included

You can upgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 for free, but you wouldn't need to if you just buy Windows 8.1. The one linked in my build above is 8.1.

Yes, upgrading the CPU in a pre-buit system is much more difficult or impossible. The BIOS they use for their motherboards is very locked/limited and is often not updated to support new CPUs. They don't have much reason to update the BIOS because they would much rather just sell you a new PC. Sometimes you can update the BIOS and upgrade the CPU, but you're at the mercy of the OEM. Motherboard manufacturers are much better at updating their board BIOS to support new CPUs. They want to be able to sell the same model of motherboard for as long as possible, so they have motivation to update the BIOS as new CPUs come out.

I'm not sure you understand how the Windows 8 to 8.1 upgrade works. You still have to buy either Windows 8 or 8.1. They are about the same price. If you buy Windows 8 then you have to perform a bunch of updates and then upgrade to Windows 8.1. If you buy 8.1 to begin with you don't have to go through the process of upgrading the OS. I don't see any reason to buy Windows 8 when you can just buy 8.1 for the same price.

The Gigabyte GA-970A-D3P motherboard I suggested has eight USB 2.0 and two USB 3.0 ports on the back. The maximum amount of RAM supported by the motherboard is 32GB.

I can tell by the pictures that the 450W PSU included in that build is junk. The little red switch on the back of the PSU is a dead give-away since that means it doesn't have active PFC.

You can do a Google search on how to disable the LED lights in the fans, but I don't know if it's worth it. I'm sure there is a wire that you can cut to disable the lights. You can also buy different fans that don't have LED lights.

That Newegg video looks as good as any.

The NZXT includes a rear 120mm fan that runs at 1200RPM and a top 140mm fan. The case will be very quiet with those two fans.
