Building a new gaming rig, caught up on a budgeting decision involving my choice of cpu and gpu and where to put my last $100.

I can get an i5-4670k with a PNY gtx 780 3gb 384-bit
or
I can get an i7-4770K with an EVGA gtx 770 2gb 256-bit

*I'd also like to add that I'm not trying to overclock any time in the near future, so without factoring in the overclocking capabilities of the i5-4670k I'd like to know... with future proofing in mind...which of these combinations would serve me better? The very most i'd have running in the background while gaming is maybe firefox, itunes, and steam.

What resolution will you be gaming at? For gaming use, it's always better to go with the highest GPU you can. The i5-4670K + GTX 780 is a very potent gaming combination. The i5 will not bottleneck the GTX 780 and leaves the option to overclock in the future. I would go with the i5-4670K + GTX 780. It will offer the best gaming performance.

Get an i5 with GTX 780. There is no difference in gaming between i5 and i7. Overclocking comes in handy if you experience lack in performance. No point in getting a unlocked processor and not overclocking at all.

yup, I understand the benefits of the k models and that I don't know what I will be doing with my machine 2 years from now so I am dropping the extra $20 for the k model whether i go i5 or i7 to keep my options open.
I just wanted to make it clear that i'm currently building a machine that will not be overclocked for some time (probably not at all as I don't want to put that stress on my system) and did not want that to factor into people's responses.

It sounds like everybody is in agreeance that the i5 won't bottleneck the 780 what so ever and ill be getting a higher fps than with the i7 770 combo?

follow up question....I play mmo's as well and i'm reading that the bigger online games like that(and maybe BF4 with 64 players) are more cpu intensive. Do you think they are cpu intensive to the point where I should consider the i7 and 770 instead of the i5 and 780?

no the i5 is just as powerful as the i7. the only other thing that the i7 has that the i5 doesn't have is hyper threading, and very few games will benefit at all from that. i would still go for the i5 and gtx 780
