I recently just bought the asus M5A97 EVO R2.0, and all works fine when I'm using my HDMI cable to my lcd tv, I can play audio perfectly through that, but I just bought a new gaming headset today, and I tested it on another PC the audio works fine, I tested on my PC it doesn't work, my motherboard has 7.1 and my case has standard mic in and input in ports at the front but when I tried my front ports it makes this high pitched sound, and it kind of sounds like my harddrive arm on the HDD.
Thing I have tried

I tried testing see if my onboard audio was enable and it was, I tried both ac97 and hd front audio none work, I tested too see if windows audio service was working it was, it's not detect either mic or headphone when plugged in, i have checked in device manager no yellow or red alerts, I have tried installing all the latest drivers, nothing works please someone help!

Solution
Video cards often have built-in sound chips that provide HDMI audio. When you have multiple sound devices, you can manage which one to use in Windows Control Panel - Sound section.

I am experiencing the same issue using the Asus M5A97 R2.0. My onboard analog (green) speaker output and my mic (pink) input do not work. I went as far as buying a $30 pci soundcard to be able to use my turtle beach headset/mic combo. The soundcard crapped out and i've returned to the original problem of no sound output off the onboard jacks. The soundcard worked with my headphones but for some reason stopped working with the mic and installed the drivers twice, causing a blue screen when the pci card was plugged in.
What I do get is a VERY faint sound output in my headphones and when i "Test" using the windows audio tool i can hear it faintly on the left speakers, but not on the right. Strange.
The optical out (onboard) is currently what i'm using to a Marantz amplifier with bookshelf speakers (normal setup) but i'm seeking the ability to use a mic and headphones for vent/teamspeak purposes.

-The next thing i'm going to try is rolling back to the previous versions of the drivers.
-i've also tried using the "realtek HD audio manager" to remap rear inputs but none of that has an effect.

any help or further troubleshooting tips are appreciated! i've been battling this issue for a long time and unfortunately have given up many times.

this is correct, however even when setting the default device as the green analog rear output, my headphones do not work. very faint sound is heard and it is only output through the left earphone.

How did you solve it? I have the same issue with my M5A97 R2.0, no sound from any of the audio jacks, I can rule out the driver issue, same behaviour in both Windows as well as Ubuntu.

I ordered another $50 PCI sound card from newegg.... I think there must be a batch of these Asus boards that have a bug or known issue.. But that's just me guessing.

Same issue here with mine My audio jack was working when I got the board now all of sudden it stopped working , I figured it was my speakers..I use my headphones from my keyboard(USB) so I'm ordering USB Speakers to avoid the jack plug..if it's a problem on this board has anyone called Asus Support? I'm asking before I tell them this is a faulty board and I want another one
