Hey.. So my grandma just got windows 8, and hates it!
Any ideas on how to make it grandma friendly? She uses Facebook, Email and general web-browsing. Until now, I'v put her most used link on the desktop, installed Windows Live Mail (her preferred Email client, and put a link to facebook in the process bar.
Willing to pay 10 - 15 bucks, if it's worth it

I'm assuming this is more about the start menu. If she really can't take the time to learn it then there are various workarounds that can be installed such as http://www.classicshell.net/ (I believe this is the one, I never had a problem with the menu so I didnt really look carefully into there). You can also make sure that the computer boots directly to the desktop instead of the metro start screen with some default settings changes http://www.pcworld.com/article/2043243/how-to-boot-to-desktop-mode-in-windows-8-1.html
Other than that, aside from some UI changes there isnt that much that is noticeably different. Personally I would just sit down with her and take the time to teach her about the Metro desktop, and maybe if she misses her old 7 OS then try and move all the folders and icons as close to they were in 7. But aside from the above things, I dont think there is much else you can do if she just has a bias against 8, as there isnt that much different other than the start menu.

*http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/keyboard-shortcuts maybe teach her some of these. For example, if she has trouble finding where to shut off the computer then tell her you can just press alt+f4 at the desktop to get the shut down options

I have a dyslectic cousin and we simply had to give up, but if that is not an opsion I would install any thing that makes W8 just a tiny bit more like W7.

Its tough enough to get senior citizens to enjoy working with a computer. This W8 thing could turn her off forever.

My 86 year old grandfather just bought a new computer with w7 for the exact same reason.

They will never need those extra features that W8 brings anyway.
