Hi TomsHardware Community
I've recently ran into a problem. I have a PC sporting an ASUS R9 280X card (which has four inputs: DisplayPort, DVI-D, DVI-I and HDMI), and I have 2 Dell U2713HM monitors (one connected through DVI-D and one through DisplayPort). I was planning on buying a third one to use in a triple screen setup, but today I ran into a problem when I was trying out portrait mode for fun on the two screens. My Displayport cable was too short so I tried using an HDMI cable instead. The HDMI cable only allowed the screen to go up to 1920x1080 resolution in Windows. This is apparently an "intended" limitation; no errors here. Afterwards I tried using a DVI-D cable by inserting it into the DVI-I port on the GPU. This didn't work. After some googling it seems that the monitor doesn't support DVI-I, so here I am...
If I buy a third U2713HM monitor, is there any way for me to actually connect it? HDMI only allows 1920x1080 and DVI-I doesn't work. Is it possible to use some kind of adapter or "multi-cable (like a DVI-D to HDMI cable or something)?
Also, a side question. It's completely impossible to play games at 3x 2560x1440 on those three monitors using only a single R9 280X, right, even using low settings? I play Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim, Bioshock Infinite, DiRT 3 and sometimes WoW.
Short version: Have 2 Dell U2713HM monitors (1440p screens), want to buy a third one, but I fear it won't be possible to connect the third one because HDMI only supports up to 1080p and DVI-I doesn't work, leaving me with working ports left on my GPU.
Thanks so much for any help, I really appreciate it!
