As it says, I am curious which cpu will be best for my am2+ socket. I currently have the a10 6800k, which according to hwmonitor is running up in the 91c temp range when loaded, and idles at 40c. I don't know if that is accurate or not, but it scares me. I turned off cool n quiet in my bios and made sure the correct amount of thermal past was applied to my coolermaster 101 cpu cooler.

Anyway, I was wondering if a cpu without a dedicated gpu would perform better. I have crossfire hd7770's, so obviously the onboard gpu is not needed. I looked through the forums but didn't find anything definitive. I know the kaveri's are out, but without upgrading the bios it wont work in my mobo, and it still has the dedicated gpu. any help would be great. Btw I would be willing to OC anything I get, provided I can keep it cool.

kaveri might be able to top your current a10 clock for clock (so overclock it) however the lion's share of the performance gains from dropping to 28nm process was given to the igpu. since you have the top teir richland, there is nothing currently available that will be significantly better that what you have. Kaveri's performance gains were made in the gpu side and little on the cpu side. They do use less power and run at lower clock speeds, but the clock speed difference isn't much and the performance is about the same at stock. You could overclock and gain some performance but not much. FM2+ doesn't have anything to get excited over at the moment and the FX series seems like its getting abandoned.

They might release a better performing cpu on FM2+, but right now, there isn't anything available.

Thanks guys. any word on how to get an accurate temp reading? bios reads 40c at idle, core temp doesn't read at all, open hardware says the cpu temp drops to 0c at idle, but says it never gets over 46c, and amd overdrive doesn't read anything either. I am interested in overclocking it (i know I can't oc much on that chip), but obviously want to make sure temp is stable before I do anything.

My case has decent airflow. I had an fx4130 and fx6350 (different mobo obviosuly) that "supposedly" idled at around 15c, so I dont think airflow is bad, and I dont live in a warm area at all.

15 degrees at idle seems awfully low, considering even idle temps wouldn't be below room temp in most cases. anyways, it might be a bios issue if nothing is giving accurate readings. if anything i'd say your bios is right, however 40c idle seems a little high. might be your cooler.

Open Hardware displays the correct CPU Core Temperatures!

CPU Core Temperatures are fed through a type of weighted equation that gives weird, often below ambient readings when idling, but when at load they are more accurate than CPU Socket temperatures. This temperature monitoring situation is a known issue with APUs; my A10-5800K has no less than four different readings, one of which is out of line like yours.

I went with this setup because the asrock fm2a75m pro4+ was the only AMD Micro ATX motherboard I could find that would allow me to crossfire in the 1 and 3 expansion slot. My Micro ATX case only has room for 4 slots, and I really like the compact size of my case for when I take my build to a friends house.

When I get home I will swap to a stock AMD CPU cooler and see if the temperature comes down. If it does then I will know it is the sensor and/or program and not a bad cooler. At stock settings I would assume the stock cooler has more than enough cooler properties.
