So I recently put together my own rig, and now I'm running into an issue where in-game (not even an intensive one, just League of Legends), my graphics card will randomly begin creating squares around the screen. This isn't extremely noticeable yet, but it is a concern for me. I'm wondering if there's any fixes out there?

Sidenote: When I got this in the mail, the box was roughed up. Think that should be taken into consideration?

are the artifacts also showing when windows is still booting up? dude try these steps:
1st. check if your power supply is sufficient enough to powerup your system. imusing thesame caRD W/A AEROCOOL STRIKE-X 500W MODULAR
try to unplug power cables from dvd rom, extra harddrive, plug the essential hardware to bootup your system then test the game.

2nd. if it still shows artifacts try to use a different card , and try your card in a different system .

3rd. check your cards temp my cards max temp goes up @ 60c
if your card reaches 80-90c while playing games its abad news you got one odf the bad apples if its still bnew you can go rma it dont waste time as much as possible ask for a replacement imediately.

do these square like thingy on your screen look like a checkerboard/chess board (aka z-fighting). do you experience any screen flickering, stretched/smeared graphics, weird shapes of graphical geometry usually in gray/black colors (sometimes multi colored)?

what PSU are you using?

Just posting so that people googling this issue might find my answer helpful. I have the exact same issues as OP and nothing worked. Just when I was ready to give up I read that the R9 270x are "factory overclocked" and that this actually caused a lot of problems for these cards. With that knowledge I downloaded "MSI Afterburner 4" and underclocked the cards memory (not core) from 1400 Mhz to 10% less, so to 1260 Mhz. That fixed my issues!
