Is there anyway I can buy just the cooling system from one of those cards? I would like to fit it to my XFX Reference R9 290 to increase its cooling performance. Plus, I think it looks really sleek.

Even if it was possible to buy just the cooling, it is not possible to fit it on your card. Your card is a refference model, while the other XFX 290s like the Black Edition use custom PCB. The cooler from the custom PCB wont match the stock PCB.

You can however put on this - Accelero Xtreme III

Be advised though - doing so will void your warranty and it is done solely at your own risk. If things go wrong you can not claim any damages to Tom's Hardware, it's forum members or anybody.

Fair enough, I assumed that they would be close enough is size that I could get it to work. If not, I think I will go ahead with a Kraken g10 bracket, and will end up liquid cooling the card. Thanks for your help.

You might also see if anyone is water-cooling their XFX R9 290/290x Double Dissipation cards. From EK's compatibility list for their R9 290x reference waterblock, it does show that both the 290 Black Edition & 290x Double Dissipation cards have reference PCBs. So in theory, it should work. Practice may prove otherwise as I am not sure if the power for the LEDs are a separate jumper, or just using power off the fans.

Update: EK just added the XFX R9 290X Double Dissipation Black Edition to the list of reference cards. Also, it appears that the LED XFX logo and the fans all run off the single fan jumper on the graphics card. So, in theory, it should be a direct swap.
