Best Litecoin mining GPU under $400

Solution

The top two cards I've seen recommended are:
1) Asus DCUII, and
2) Sapphire Toxic

ASUS has one of the best coolers out there, and on average very high quality cards. Go by STATISTICS, not one or two individual comments. Statistically, every model has failures. Look at the Customer Reviews. The cards are fairly new, but so far the ASUS scores pretty high.

Also, the R9-280X costs $400 so I don't know why it's been quoted above as $300.

Asus version ($425)...
The latest information I'm hearing is that it's difficult to make any money now with a standard PC setup.

You really need to Google and read more about this such as "litecoin profitability" etc. It appears it's only going to get HARDER in the future as well.

Power Supply?
In general, just look at the PCIe x6 and x8-pin connectors on the PSU. For example, if the card requires 2x6-pin and you have that you should be fine. Yours has a 1x6-pin and 1x6/8-pin so I see no problems with an HD7950.

Also look at the newer R9 cards. Sure they're basically rebadged HD7000 series but see where the best value is and make sure to compare apples-to-apples (good COOLER, customer reviews, and GPU frequency).

Yeah, if you plan on building a gaming rig to recop some money by scrypt mining, then ok, but if its pure investment then I would not recomend right now.

Simple calculator:
http://www.coinwarz.com/cryptocurrency

Figure a 280x can get 650 kh minimum, most likely ~720 with tweaking at about 320w. This will draw quite a bit of electricity 24/7 so make sure you have cheap electricity(not PG&E or the likes.) Finally, if prices do not rise on the currencies factor in maybe 50% loss of profit by the end of the month.

The Asus R9-280X requires a 1x6-pin, and 1x8-pin which your PSU provides:

I'm not sure about 2x270's (I doubt it), but even if your power supply could handle that I don't recommend CROSSFIRE if you game.

I recommend you invest for the best gaming experience, and assume you won't make any profit.

Any recommendations for which brand of 280x? Really want the best cooler as that makes a great factor in overall life of the card.

Yeah im not looking to make millions or even thousands. And I am not going to be mining 24/7. Ive done some calculations for dogecoin and i think i could recoup the money in 3-4 months of only overnight mining (Free electricity).

I barely play games so gaming is not the first priority. I just sold my GTX 650 ti boost 2gb evga SC, so 280x would be a step much higher in regards to gaming anyways correct?

Yes correct at around 300 USD 280x is great if you can find it and will be colossal upgrade to you. Also, I only got about 1000 DOGE last weekend with my 7870 at 370kh when I was fooling around which is about 1-2 bucks I believe so be careful as results may vary.

Yes i know the value is extremely low right now for doge but im hoping it might increase in the near future.

Which brand has the best cooling for 280x? Read somewhere to steer clear from asus?

Sapphire Toxic ($400): http://pcpartpicker.com/part/sapphire-video-card-112210140g

They are both very similar. The Asus is slightly faster, but the Sapphire can beat it (barely) once further overclocked. Personally, I'd get the ASUS. http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/ASUS/R9_280X_Direct_Cu_II_TOP/26.html

Other:
Just FYI, but if this was just about GAMING alone, then the Asus GTX770 that costs $320 barely beats this card that costs $425.

So the R9-280X cards are pretty crappy value right now for gamers at least in North America. Not sure of UK and pricing elsewhere.

What do you mean by free electricity?
