initially i was going to purchase windows 7 home premium (obvious reasons) but since then 8 has improved? i read 8/8.1 is better then 7
but im now comfused as to which one to buy :??:

pc will mainly be used for gaming and general web/video/word use etc

my pc cpu & v.card if it helps:

Solution
It comes down to the interface. Gaming and overall performance are pretty much the same, but 8 boots up a bit faster. You can boot to the desktop in 8.1, but the Start menu is still gone for the time being. You could buy Start 8 or similar to get a more 7ish feel. Personally, I am sticking with 7 until there is something better for my needs/taste. Love Windows Phone 8 tho on my Nokia, nice on my friends tablet too. Can't seem to get used to it on non-touch devices though.

Have to decide which interface you prefer.

I would go with Win 7. You can try out Windows 8.1 for free for 90 days to get a feel for it. However, only Windows 8.1 Enterprise edition (read as expensive) offers the 90 day trial period.

If you don't like Win 8.1 Enterprise, then go ahead and buy Win 7. If you do like Win 8.1, then go ahead and buy the home version. Either way you will need to backup any important data on the C: Drive before installing Win 7 or Win 8.1 Home.

i think i might go for windows 7 as originally planned because ill have no problems with it, it will be compatible with every game/hardware/software i use no questions asked and i think you guys are right about the interface, its probably only good if you have a touch screen and im not really into that
then when windows 9 comes out ill look into that

but one question is directx 11.1 worth it? to go and purchase 8.1

No, we are just barely seeing mainstream use of DX11 in games. Most games are DX9.0c with some DX11 content sprinkled on top. I think it will still be some time before DX11 is at the core of any games, probably happen once XP's installed base drops, but it's too heavily used to ignore right now.

Windows 9 is looking to be a polished version of 8, kind of like 7 was a polished Vista. What remains to be seen is if MS actually listens to the majority of its users and business's and actually gives them what they are screaming for.
