I'm building a high power gaming rig with:
i7 4770k
NVIDIA gpu (still deciding on model)
No overclocking
16gb ram
Im trying to decide what mobo to get and need some feedback.

Solution
Maybe not now, but 6-9 months from now after seeing the poweravailable and it was mentioned 'high power gaming rig', when you can OC a 4770K to 4 GHz, with nothing more than changing the multiplier, it gets people looking more at the OC - and the Hero is great, it can set itself up for 4.2, 4.4 and 4.6 if the CPU can carry that high of an OC
wait...

you have an i7-4770k picked out but dont want to overclock?

you should buy the i7-4770 (no K) instead for cheaper.

then buy a h87 motherboard (though you could get away with something else with a cheaper chipset like h81 if you really wanted to.)

i would say something from asus.

@tradesman

he mentioned zero overclocking so such an expensive board doesnt really make sense. though i do agree, its an awesome board.

not always tradesman. though yes i do agree a bit.

i have a rampage iii extreme motherboard with an i7-920 i built back in 2010 and i just now thought about it. to be honest i havent needed to worry about it.

in any case buying a K series cpu with a non z87 is silly. the op must make the decision on their own if they want an non-k with a h87 or a k with a z87. overclocking or not overclocking.

i did agree with you... the hero is definitely a very nice board. between high level boards like the one i use and regular z87 boards. very solid recommendation if they choose to go that path (though they could get away with a z87-k as well).

Agree, it the OPs call - I just respond to what I see, here 'high powered', with no budget listed, I lay out my favorite, once a budget get's mentioned then can narrow things down - would have been easier to say the Extreme - then know the price would go down from there, I picked the Hero for my build as the best overall I found during my first 20 or so Haswell builds, haven't found anything that beats it

Thank you both! @tradesman @ssddx As budget is open and I am considering oc in the future, have either of you tryed the Maximus extreme? Also tradesman have you ever found you actually need 32gb if so doing what? And also is a RAID fast enough or should I break the bank and get large ssd instead of one small one? How much does say 4.0 oc on the 4770k run down its life? I want to spend the extra money on a good system but I dont want it to last just a year before I have to replace the cpu.

The Extreme is a great mobo, but unless going Tri-SLI or XFire, think it's a bit of overkill, I went Hero thinking at times I'll want to run and test in SLI/XFire (I use my rigs to test components for new client builds, upgrades and repairs), I've built on a couple of Extremes, but think they were wanted in part for bragging rights as the Hero would have done just as well (same with the Formula if you've looked at it)....I've been going primarily with a combo of an SSD (for OS and primary apps) alongside a (or multiple HDs) and occasionally the HDs paired with a pair of SSDs in RAID)....As far as OCing the CPU, you'll prob get tired of the rig before anything would happen with the CPU, I've still got a pair of Q6600's running along fine in the family that were passed to my kids and their kids that I built in early 2007, (one is running 4.0 GHz, also have a number of those out that clients still run 24/7 at 3.6 and up (the Q6600 was a 2.4 stock CPU), my 2500K is over 2 years old and has run about 4.8 and higher the whole time 24/7, have my IB 3570K running 4.7 for about a year now, and fully expect both to be running for another 3-4 or more years

@tradesman1 thanks, so am I to understand that hds and ssds can be connected with the same raid? Also if I were to go with the hero with 4.0 oc on the 4770k what gpu would you use? I am against using radeon if that narrows it down. And for example I want to be able to run skyrim on ultra graphics setting and edit videos in 1080.

No, I was saying i'll set up one or two SSDs in RAID 0 and have 1 or more regular platter drives or 2 SSDs in RAID and 2 or more platters in a RAID, or a SSD and then 2 or more platters in a RAID - need roughly the same style Drives to make a RAID. For GPUs , I lean towards to nVidia myself, initially I had a 660TI (EVGA super) on the Hero, then picked up a 280X which was sweet but wanted more, then last week I picked up a pair of 780s and have them in SLI - think I've run most all models of GPUs from about a 7850 on up in my Hero (I use it to test new components for client builds). It will really depend on your budget, but think I'd look at the 760, 770 or 780s if budget permits, with the bit coin mining rage in full swing (to me anyway) the newer AMD cards are now way overpriced - when I got my 280X at the release they went for $309 - last I looked at the Egg the Asus CU model I got now goes for $459, the GTX 770 (a better card is $359), think the 760 is like $249

I takeon all kinds of projects, often have 1-2 OSs running in VMs, do imaging work for clients, Video, CAD, some GIS development, software evals, sim evals, don't really 'need' the SLI, just picked up the 780s last week, and may move one to my IB build and sell off the 280X, the bit miners have them in demand and retail price has gone up about $140 since they were released
