How is it possible to check what machines are connected to your router and how much internet traffic they are causing, and possibly disconnect them?

Solution
The router must have a feature that allows you to this. Most consumer routers you are lucky to get a list of who is connected.

You of course can spend big money and buy commercial equipment that has nice feature like this :(

The way some people do this is use dd-wrt and then have it collect what is called j-flow data and send the data to netflow data collection machine. You can then run reports of activity. It is very close to real time data but is really a tool for long term connection of data...so you can go back and say what was making my connection so slow yesterday. Still this is quite a lot of work to get all set up.

Now you might also be able to use a open source firewall like PFSENSE to do this. It would be nice if you...

It would be nice if you could just hook between the router and the modem but because of the NAT you would not really know who the real person was. I suspect you would have to reconfigure the router to not do the nat and let the firewall do the nat.
