Just to challenge myself I am trying to reload XP Home for a friend on an eMachine EZ1601, anyone have a clue why it will not accept the key code on the machine?

Solution
The product code on the machine is valid only for the pre-installed OEM installation on that machine. It's not valid for a clean install from a Microsoft disc.

If your installing from an XP retail disc, you must use the Product Key supplied with that disc, but only if that key has not already been used to install XP on a different computer which is still in use.

Otherwise you have to buy a new licence & Product Key from Microsoft, or purchase another retail disc complete with it's own Product Key (virtually impossible to buy now anyway as it's no longer stocked by software vendors).
