2 CPUFan Headers

Hello,

Sorry if they aren't called headers. I'm pretty new to this "learning the hardware" thing, but I'm trying. Okay, so I recently updated my computer and I gave my old computer to my little brother who says it is fine for everything he does (I plan on surprising him with a modern computer as soon as possible though). However, we both have a question concerning his board.

It has two CPUFan headers. We have the CPU heatsink plugged into number one and was wondering, would it be unwise to plug into another fan to the second header? He's going to buy a cooler for his computer at the end of the month but right now he wants to give it some extra "cool", so he stripped down a secondary CPU heatsink fan he had lying around and then turned it into a "case" fan and then plugged it into the second CPUFan header.

The computer booted up fine but I told him to turn off the computer and wait until I could ask some professionals just in case.

So, is this a really bad idea or is it safe? Can this actually cause it to get "hotter"? His temps were rising to 52c but we have noticed it dropped to 46-49c with the fan on--this was on a 30% load.

Thanks!

edit:

Also, can extra external or internal hard drives drive up temperatures? Because he has four plugged in for storage and it spiked up his temps by nearly 7c!

Great illustration :p and good thinking. Sucking some fresh air is a must. Also you should be safe using the optional cpu fan header for a case fan. But the speed of fan will increase and decrease depending on the cpu load and temperature. If you have an option to control fan speeds in the BIOS, use it to configure how you like. Just make sure the main cpu fan is running fine.

I have done the same thing. It helps in cooling if it is placed in proper position of airflow. If it is placed at wrong place, it blocks the airflow to the cpu and that cause temps to rise. You can do some experiments by monitoring primary cpu rpm's and temps and changing the secondary fan position. See where it fits best for cooling. I suggest put it in side panel, or bottom. But don't let it just hang in the cabinet.

Hello,

Okay, thank you for the reply! We have moved it around a few times now and haven't seen an difference in position, except if I had it blowing out air instead of blowing in fresh air. This is when we placed it at the bottom of the computer to push out. This kept it at a high, which was 45c-52c when gentle browsing with Spotify in the background.

I have drawn, horrible looking I know, an illustration for how we currently have it set up. With this, he gets 35c with an odd jump to 49c when browsing or doing some medium gaming.

Is this a wise setup? I figured instead of sucking all the air out one fan had to at least bring in some new air. Right?

Thanks for the answers guys!

Yes, the main CPU fan is running fine. The stock fan though, as it has done since we got it, turns on, off for a second and then back on and works perfectly fine. And yea, he has an option in the BIOS I do believe. We'll mess with it after we find the perfect position for the fan. :)

But for now, my question as been solved!

Thanks again! Really wish I could select multiple solutions or at least rep...

EDIT

@Mysticalsam

He has a pretty old, compact HP case that didn't have any side mounts for a fan, only two places for case fans at the back were the PSU sticks out and a place on the front, though he sorta modded the case so it could move more up or down.
