I'm building a new PC. First time at this, so forgive any stupid questions.

When I decided on getting Windows 8.1 rather than 7, I discovered that the wireless adapter I'd planned on getting wasn't compatible.
I've done some searching and there's plenty of forums and questions about people's wireless playing up after upgrading to 8.1, and most of the answers talk about downloading new drivers.
While I could buy one of the adapters mentioned there and follow the driver update suggestions, I'd rather just get one that will be compatible to begin with if I can help it. Saves time and effort, and I don't have to guess/hope that the one I choose will have a suitable update for it.

Also, I'd like to stick with a PCI-E one rather than USB, and keep the price reasonable (<$50).

Thanks.

On another desktop I have this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA24G... and it too works very well. The CD (supplied) has the drivers and needs to be run first.

I know the thread is old, but maybe this will be of a value to someone.
I bought TP Link TL-WDN3800 and works fine with Windows 8.1 64-bit Home edition. HOWEVER, only on 2.4GHz freq.
There's obviously a patch provided from a vendor but be aware that the patch does NOT activate the 5GHz frequency after applying it (not in my case at least).
I had to go to the Device Manager and enable it manually in device properties (Advanced tab).
