I used iolo disk scrubber to clean my HD in hopes of installing a new OS and programs; I wanted to give the computer to my learning disabled grandson. Disk Scrubber changed my HD's name from C: to X:. All the files and directories seem to be there but the HD is not being recognized. Hence, I can't load a new OS or format the drive. What can I do to make the HD useable again. Thanks

To make sure your hardrive is active, check to see if the drive appears in Disk Management. To open Disk Management, right click My Computer and choose Manage. Disk Management is found on the left under Storage.
If its not active, right click on the hard drive and chose 'Make partition as active'

Here are some links that would help you keep going;

boot the computer to the boot menu (one of the f keys and it varies between manufacturers) and select to boot from dvd.insert os install disk and enter.this will take you to the install screen where you will be given your install options. custom install is what you need here.there will also be options to delete partitions and format the disk.after install you should have your c drive back.
