Okay, so my system has been giving me a lot of trouble lately. Here's my system:
ASRock Fatal1ty 990FX Pro
AMD FX8350
16GB RAM
R9 290 in crossfire (and a few others lying around)
Corsair AX1200i PSU

1. I use Windows 8.1, no overclocking.
2. I've tested my harddrives, RAM, PSU, which are all fine.
3. When I use my graphics card (I've tested four different ATI cards) without any drivers i.e. after uninstalling all catalyst software, cleaning with CCleaner, disconnecting from the internet so that windows cannot install new drivers, I have no problems. The moment I install ATI drivers (13.xx), on one card, two cards, crossfire enabled or disabled, my screens go blank after 3-15 minutes and shortly after that my system hangs.
4. I've tried various things posted by other members for problems related to mine, but with no success.
5. I've updated my bios, done a clean install of windows, check that everything is seated properly on the motherboard, checked that nothing is overheating.

Is there something that I'm missing? I hope I've posted enough information for you to work with, if not, let me know. By all accounts, my system should be quite amazing. At the moment though I feel like tossing the whole load down a cliff.

I'm having the EXACT same issue with 2 different R9 280X (Gigabyte and Sapphire Toxic), loss of GPU signal, black screen followed by a system freeze.
I also receive LOTS of "AMD Driver has stopped responding and has recovered", I've tried everything possible for the past 3 months.

Seeing this is quite common.. Is it possible AMD drivers are simply completely broken?

I think it is also a problem with the Windows 8.1 OS. I have an internet shop with 5 different computers using an R9 290 (while 20 of which are mid range setup with HD7770s and HD7870s, total 25 computers), 4 of them running in windows 7, while one computer, I had the same problem, when I upgrade to 8.1. I downgraded this computer to Win7, and now its working fine.

Well this is interesting I suppose. I've installed the 14.1 drivers and I still get a black screen (actually, the display corrupts for a moment before going black), BUT:
1. If I don't do anything on my system, i.e. I just let everything sit, it's fine. It ran for more than an hour without problems.
2. Without enabling eyefinity, the system runs for about ten minutes (longer than with the previous drivers), before going black. The moment I enable eyefinity, the system crashes.
3. Between 30 seconds and 2 minutes after running any software the system crashes.

Any new ideas? I'd wager that drivers must be part of the problem, but I'm wondering if the motherboard isn't part of the issue?
