I'm building my first PC. It shall be for gaming and perhaps sound recording and video editing (non-professional). I'm looking to stay sub $1800. $2000 would be my hard budget.

Now I've managed to come up with a rough plan that I think is solid but I imagine I've done some silly things. So I'm asking:

-Am I spending money efficiently?

-Are there any "You might as well get for $X more because you're already spending $X and it's a significant improvement."

-X is overkill.

-X will not work with X.

-You idiot. You're missing X.

This is the build I've come up with so far. (I'm not including sound card and OS in the cost so that can be ignored).

-Intel I7 4770K CPU

-MSI Z87-G45 MB

-ADATA XPG V2 (2x8GB)

-OCZ 128GB Vector SSD

-WD Black Series 1 TB HDD

-Sapphire Tri-x OC R9 290

-Corsair 600W Modular power supply.

-Antec Nine Hundred case.

If you're referring to the CX 600, I would go with a SeaSonic or XFX for about the same price and get much better quality out of it, as it seems you will be pushing the system pretty well.

You're missing a CPU cooler. (Sorry, had to) If you have the budget for it, add in a Noctua U12S or U14S. These are about the best cooler you can get right now, and are stupidly quiet.

If you're building in the US, I would get the 780 over the 290, would be worth it :) Other than that, the 4770 could be dropped to an i5, but not needed to. At this budget, I would keep it.

From what you provided here, the build looks just fine. But I must say if your getting a 4770k you'll probably want to overclock. Which means you want an aftermarket cooler. You can either go the closed loop watercooling route, or the air cooling route. If you go the water cooling, get something like the H80i or the H100i. If you go the air cooling route, get something like the Hyper 212 if you want to go cheap or the Noctua NH-D14 for the more expensive route.

I did not know that. I definitely do not want Toshiba anything haha. Thank you. (I'm looking at pcpartpicker right now).

I was referring to that one. I really didn't have any information to go on other than I knew I wanted a modular power supply. I'll check out both those brands.

I got the 4770k because the price difference wasn't so bad that it made me not want to get it. I don't plan on overclocking right away but I could see myself doing so later. That's why I hadn't selected a cooler.
