My i7 950 Bloomfiled is overheating! What to do?

Hi guys,

My computer is shutting down randomly so i tried to install core temp to see if my cpu is overheating and yes it did.

Please check my screenshot from core temp and realtemp below:

Im not sure why did this happened. Things are running smootly until i upgrade my computer to windows 7 to windows 8.1 and i doubt that will be the reason for this.

Is there anything I can do to avoid overheating?

When i take that screenshot above there are no other windows open other than mozilla firefox.

Is the fan working? If so you should reseat the heat sink. Remove it, clean off the old TIM, apply TIM, reseat.

I think my fan is failing. It is running but i think in low power.. I tried to enable the "CPU fan fail warning" on the bios and it is beeping after i restart. BTW, is there any brand of thermal paste that i should be buying or any brand will do?

They are all pretty similar, unless you are going to overclock to the max. Just be careful as some are conductive and will cause your motherboard to short out if you get some on it. If your fan is failing your first step should be getting a new fan. I use Corsair AF120s on my heat sink. If you have a top-down cooler then it will use a different size.

You will notice also on the screenshot here http://content.screencast.com/users/CustomBotSolutions/folders/Default/media/f7b311c4-3ee6-42cf-9cdd-78814d0ed561/IMG_3613.JPG that the "Current CPU Fan Speed is 0 RPM". I checked the fan and it is running.. Is there anything i can do?

Are you using the stock heatsink?

I had the same problem with my Intel Core i7 920.

The problem is that some of the pins broke and only half of the heatsink was making contact with the processor.

Also, the thermal paste that was included with the heatsink was horrible.

You can find a 212 evo for ~$35. That will work great for you and comes with decent TIM.

Is that idle? That still seems really high. If that is under load with the stock cooler they're ok.

How fast is the fan spinning? You could try going into your BIOS and changing the cpu_fan setting to see if that makes a difference.

Here's the latest screenshot of my bios.

You can see that it my CPU fan is in 0rpm. But when i checked its rotating.
What could be the problem? THanks!

You probably have your cpu fan plugged into the wrong port. Read your motherboard manual to see where it should go. Your motherboard also might have cpu_fan next to some of the 4 pin plugs on the top edge.

Im sure its plugged on the right port. It says "CPU Fan" and its the only port that it will fit in.

It lists compatibility for LGA 1366 so yes it's compatible. I'm not sure about your BIOS reporting 0 rpm. How many pins is the cpu fan? You need 3 pin to report the rpm and 4 pin to control the rpm.
