can i use usb as hdd?

hello all
i have a notebook and the hdd belt is damaged
can any body tell me how do i install linux based os in my usb device ??
and is it possible that usb can work as primary partition or hdd?
if posible please tell me.i am waiting

As long as the motherboard of the laptop supports boot from usb devices, you can run something like puppy linux, but you cannot use the usb as a traditional HDD...

That is not correct. You can do a normal install on a flash drive though performance may be an issue.

Here is a list of distributions designed to run from a flash drive.

I use Porteus.

Ubuntu will run from a cd although you cant save files unless you send them to a seperate USB or Run from a USB flash drive just make sure it is big enough to save the files you create also dont forget to set the device you choose to 1st boot in your BIOS
