When I try to install Windows XP, off a CD, I get a blue screen error when it is "loading Windows".... Normally I would change the hard drive access in the bios from AHCI to legacy or similar, but this bios has no such option. That failing, I would normally find the windows installation driver from the manufacturer, however, Dell does not list such a driver either. Any ideas?

Wonder if maybe parts of the outer shell of the laptop were replaced. Oh well, that has no bearing on your problem.

Does your Windows disc include Service Pack 2? Older Windows XP discs had issues with booting on computers with PCI Express support. They would bluescreen with the same error you stated.

I'll keep looking for other ideas to check.

Look on Intel's website. Your laptop uses either the Intel 945GM or 945PM (945GM for Intel Graphics, 945PM with discrete graphics) with the ICH7M southbridge. Search for "Intel Matrix Storage Manager". 8.9.0.1023 is the newest version that supports the ICH7M on Windows XP.

Thank you for the quick reply!

I have downloaded the ICH7M drivers and currently running through all options with them. The laptop is branded as an Inspiron E1705, but the service tag comes up as an Inspiron 9400... When I load the ICH7M drivers on a floppy the ICH8-ME selection comes up as highlighted, but none of the ones I've selected at this time get past the error, once "windows is starting" comes up. I've tried 2 different hard drives, with the same results.

I work in a small ISP, and we do system repair, it is a customer's laptop, but I do not believe that the mainboard has been replaced. I know the owner, from my previous job where he worked as a department manager... While it is possible the motherboard has been replaced the service tag I got off the bottom panel of the laptop. Not from the bios or what is reported at bootup. Although those did match the service tag determination...

The bios does post MP061 and according to the following chart that is an Inspiron 9400. The blue screen reports that Pci.sys cannot load and at that point the installation stops.
