how do I setup 2 mixed graphic cards?

So I have my old Radeon 5550 and a newer 7750 I'd love both have both running different monitors but when I connect both to the motherboard and boot it always loads only one card and the device manger shows a caution sign on the other.
It changes back and forth on which one turns on so I knew they are installed right but what is preventing them from both running at the same time?
Drivers?
Motherboard ( least likely) ?
PCI slots?
Neither support crossfire.

I use AMD catalyst is that the issue?

I didn't even know that you can run multi-gpu setup in a non crossfire or non SLI mode and I don't think it is possible. Also I think both cards support crossfire. HD 5450 supports crossfire and it lower than both of them.

while you probably can't crossfire them as they're too different, you should be able to run them independently for separate monitors (but that means you might need to go into Catalyst and make sure that crossfire is disabled and not stuck in limbo).
