My Windows 7 PC was working beautifully, but it started to go haywire a couple of weeks ago. First, programs sometimes stop responding. Once they hang (the screen shows a translucent view of the program), the PC needs to be rebooted.

Then I have started to have all sorts of access/security problems. My User Settings are ‘Administrator’. First, I couldn’t save files to the Route Directory and other folders. I redid my settings and this was fixed.

I tried to update Win 7 to Service Pack 1, but can’t (error_access_denied 0x80070005).

Then I started getting "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file" error messages when I tried to start certain programs.

A database program that I use has stopped working all together. I uninstalled it and installed it again, but now nothing happens at all when I try to start it.

And my .Net Framework program won’t respond and I can’t reinstall it.

Also, I saved some Excel and PDF files to the C:\ route directory. I moved them to a different folder. Now, I can no longer open them due to an access problem.

So, my PC hangs, I can’t update Windows and I can’t use some programs

To date, I have run a regular and a boot-time scan with Avast and a full scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. Nothing was found.

I wanted to do a System Restore, but there are no restores on hand. They all disappeared.

I have made some web recommended adjustments to my User Settings with no success.

I ran a Windows Repair using its DVD. I also used the ‘sfc /scannow’ command’. It stops working at 93% and is unsuccessful.

I’m at a loss. I want to avoid reformatting my drive if possible. I would appreciate any recommendations.

Regards…John
