Hi, I was under the impression that PCI Express GPUs were backwards compatible with any PCI Express slot. I've been getting conflicting information with regards to this issue... so Most people on the forums say that they are backwards compatible, yet others (including card manufacturers I've contacted) say there's problems with 1.0 boards accepting newer cards...

I have an Intel DQ965GF motherboard (can't afford an upgrade right now) with PCI Express 1.0 slots (compatible with revision 1.0a). I need a decent low-power GPU under $50-60. I found an HD 5670 on ebay that I think is a 1.0?

Here's the URL: http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-OEM-Dell-512MB-AMD-VisionTek-Radeon-HD-5670-DVI-VGA-HDMI-Video-Card-TKRH5-/400367605648?pt=PCC_Video_TV_Cards&hash=item5d37c4d790

I was initially looking at an HD 6670, 7750 or a GT 640, but those are all PCI Express 2.0/3.0... idk if they'd work. I would appreciate any help on the subject. Thanks.

Evan

All right read this first, http://www.overclock.net/a/the-final-answer-to-the-controversial-pcie-x16-version-compatibility

And your MB has the intel Q965 chipset, and it has the pcie 1.1 version.

And I check the MB which does have the BIOS update on 10/5/2009, so it will probably work fine. But I will recommend to buy the GT640, because both HD5670 and HD6670 are pcie2.1 x16 card, and HD7750 is pcie3.0x16.

Thank you for your replies. As I said, I originally preferred better/newer, 2.0/3.0 cards such as this Galaxy GT 640 -- http://www.ebay.com/itm/Galaxy-NVIDIA-GeForce-GT-640-GC-1GB-128-bit-GDDR3-PCI-Express-3-0-64TGF8HX6FZ-/291072309964?pt=PCC_Video_TV_Cards&hash=item43c542facc

However, I contacted Galaxy Tech Support about the card (PCI Express 3.0), and they said: "Our cards are backwards compatible to 1.1 only. They're not compatible to 1.0 and 1.0a." I also contacted Sapphire about a HD 6670, and they said: "No it will not be compatible, you need MB with at least true PCIE 2.0v slot." Like I said, I've been getting conflicting information... Any thoughts?

Thanks again,
Evan
