Need some help upgrade my (very) crappy PC

I need to upgrade my computer, but I have several ideas on how to do it. First, let me explain to you how bad it is. It can't run Kingdom Hearts on a PS2 Emulator. But yet, I play Sins of a Solar Empire: Trinity, Loadout, Empire: Total War (at bad quality) and other games. This leads me to believe that I have an extreme reliance on my outdated Nvidia 9500 GT graphics card. The specs of this dinosaur are:

Intel Pentium E218 2.0 GHZ Processor

Nvidia 9500GT Video Card

4GB memory (standard kind that came with the PC)

350W PSU (shipped with PC)

I have about $200, and no cash income (I'm a highschooler) but could sell some things if I have to. I was curious if buying an GeForce 760 at $220 would increase my performance. I would buy a 7970, but those shot up over $130 over Christmas, and the 760 did not, and I believe they are of comparable performance. Obviously buying that would give me increased performance, but would it even be worth it? How much of a bottleneck would I get from the aging CPU? And I am definitely going to be phasing out these old PC parts with new ones, like FX-8320's, 500W PSU's and such as soon as I can. I just want something I can get now that I can tangibly see the changes it made. I will eventually want to play Star Citizen, and I want to play Skyrim with graphics mods relatively soon. Thanks!

With a 350W (probably el cheapo) PSU - you will be very limited in what you can add to it.

The issue is mainly the 9500GT (though the E2180 isn't exactly a speedster). Based on your income I'd suggest something around an 260X (find a good sale and get for $150) and look at soon replacing the PSU. You might even need a new PSU to run the 260X.

I highly doubt a 760/7970 will work with your PSU.

Other quick/cheap upgrade is to drop in a Q6600/E8400 CPU for under $50.

He's got it right, you're low on power. Maybe make a deal with your parents to help supply the power you need for your new component. Guilt them into it. Get that new card, unpackage it, and fiddle around with it for a while. Then come out of your room whining, "Mom! (or Dad! whoever is the bigger sucker) My computer says I don't have enough power to run my new graphics card!" Proceed to explain that what you need is an 80+ certified 600W power supply. They're not at all expensive. "Please, Mom. Please!"

Best of luck.
