how do i upload photos from an sd card to a lap top. it keeps telling me to format the card. help

Well yeah if you format the card, all data WILL BE ERASED. Try inserting the card into a camera and connect the camera with the pc using a usb cable. Access the folder, copy and paste ALL data from the card to your desktop, and then format the card.
