HD television won't show designated resolution from PC

Two problems:

1) When I connect my desktop computer to my HD tv (supposedly it's a 1080p tv) via HDMI, I have to set the resolution setting in Windows to 1050p. That's the only way to get the image to correctly fill the screen. Kinda irritating that it won't work correctly with the desired resolution of 1080p. I have a computer monitor that is also 1080p and I have no problems there.
Why would a 1080 tv be more compatible with a 1050 signal?

2) If I hook up my laptop to the same tv via HDMI, there is no resolution setting in Windows that will correctly fill the screen. This is actually an annoyingly common problem I've had with laptops. I've experienced it with a variety of laptops on a variety of tv's, and there doesn't appear to be any rhyme or reason to it. How do I fix problem 2? Problem 1 is more tolerable, but still troubling.

Thanks!

Do you have GPU scaling enabled on your video card's drivers? HDTV's tend to have a scaling function built into them, and having scaling done by both the GPU and the TV could cause weird things like your problem. I suspect problems 1 and 2 are actually just different symptoms of the same problem.

The necessary setting may have different names based on what GPU you have installed.

Using a tablet and there didn't seem to be a way to reply to any of your answers specifically, so I am posting this as a "solution".

Anyhow, on the desktop I am using an ASUS GTX 770, and on the laptop its a 780m. I will look into scaling options. I usually avoid DVI because its my understanding that it only transmits video, and I prefer to not need a separate cable for audio. Or am I mistaken about DVI's capability?

dvi has waaay better quality video than hdmi i would perfer dvi cause hdmi makes all the colors washed out and hurts my eyes plus audio through a different cable has better quality because of no mixing interference waves because in hdmi they are really close together

I agree that DVI offers better quality. Going to try to mess with the GPU scaling settings first, and if that doesn't work then I may explore the DVI option. I'm just hoping to avoid having multiple cables if I can help it. My only reason for that really is because the cables would have to be run across the floor in a high traffic area. I've been using a flat HDMI cable to avoid a trip hazard.
