Bios won't allow me to enable overclocking

I've overclocked my pc before from 3-4GHz, over the summer I turned this off because it was really hot and was having a little trouble with the cooling, now however i'd like to get it back up to what it was seeing as it's not getting above 50C anymore.

I can get into my bios settings, i can change certain things, RAM timings, voltages, it accepts them all, but as soon as i try to enable cpu overclocking, it disables overclocking on everything, ram too. (reverts when trying to boot into bios) I've tried putting the overclock settings to the default values, so no change should be made, but it doesn't seem to like anything to do with it now for some reason.

Gigabyte GA-X48-DQ6,
intel e8400,
OCZ blade series 1066mhz,
1000W antec psu,
nvidia geforce 9600GT

I'm having a similar problem, but I think I've figured it out so I'm posting answers on all these old threads that keep popping up because I still have this mobo or similar.

I tried everything. One minor change like changing the clock speed +1 from 266 to 267 wouldn't even keep. Just simply enabling cpu host clock wouldn't keep.

I unplugged all unnecessary USB devices leaving only the mouse and keyboard, and for some reason any change I make (so long as its a functional change) now saves in the bios and it boots overclocked properly.

I plug the USB Harddrives back in and my overclock settings get defaulted every time. Tested 4-5 times now. Everytime it fails. So I just leave them unplugged until I get to windows. I'm running windows...

Bios is up to date, it checked that when i was taking the overclock off a while ago, I've checked i'm saving properly as I can change the voltage and ram settings, it's just the act of enabling the cpu overclock which causes it to fail to boot and disable everything. I'll try resetting CMOS today though. Thanks for replying.

What exactly happens when it fails to boot? Does it post and say overcocking failed or does it not even post?

Just tried resetting CMOS, still does exactly the same thing.

I can get into the bios, I can change the settings, I enable overclocking, without actually changing any frequencies or voltages, everything is set to default, then I hit F10, save and exit, it restarts. It then fails to post (doesn't get past the Gigabyte splash screen) and restarts again to disable all overclocking capabilities (including the ram settings).

Just tried putting everything to auto and enabling the turbo overclock feature. It accepted it, but it didn't actually overclock anything, the cpu remained at the default settings (3GHz) and the ram was actually underclocked.

Also just tried using Easy tune 5 to overclock, this either doesn't apply an overclock, causes the computer to freeze, or causes a blue screen.
