I'm currently in the process of building a new PC. It will have a new mobo/CPU and I have a dilemma.

Do I simply need to reformat my HDD and then re-install once it's hooked to my new setup or do I have to deactivate my Win7, reformat and then re-install?

It will be AMD to AMD.

Solution

If this Windows was for a pre-built computer (Dell, Lenovo, etc...) you can't use that Windows setup on the new system.

OEM Windows licenses are tied to the first system they are installed on. That does not always prevent them from being activated on another system though, but Microsoft may block it from being activated.

So it won't matter that it will be going on to new hardware? I was under the impression that it was registered to your hardware to a certain level.
