Thermal paste for an initial startup test

I see in all the guides I watch, that I should assemble most of the components outside of the case and turn it on to make sure everything's functioning properly. Since I'm using a closed loop liquid CPU cooler in my final build, it's probably not going to work for a pre-installation test. If I use the stock CPU cooler for this test, is it necessary to apply thermal paste for the few seconds that it's going to be active for?
I'm asking, since I don't have isopropyl alcohol on hand to clean it off afterwards, wondering if I really need to go out and buy some.

Thanks.

Yes you should use paste whenever the cpu is turned on, even for a split second.
Honestly if you are going with an AIO you dont need to do a test outside the case. The only reason people do is because if there IS an issue, its easier to take out. It only saves you 50 seconds or so. I would just go straight to case.

Thanks a bunch for the fast response, I'll do that then. It's just not the kind of thing you want to do without being absolutely certain.
