New laptop GPU overheating and shutting down computer

Intel Core i7-3630QM 2.4GHz

So, I got a new laptop today and after updating windows I launched League of Legends. However, 10 seconds in to the game the fan started spinning loudly and the computer shut down. I had to wait a couple of minutes before I could boot it up again. I tried launching LoL again with every setting set to low and the same thing happened. I then updated my graphics driver and tried again, same result. I then went to update windows to windows 8.1 from 8 and when it booted and started applying updates the fan started spinning loudly and the computer shut down again.

I ran SpeedFan during two of the attempts, on the first the temperature of the GPU went right to 85C and slowly worked itself up to 95C at which point I alt+F4ed out of the game which caused the temperature to drop again. Second attempt I ran it on lowest settings and temperature started at 78C in loading screen, rising continually.

I can use the laptop without issue when browsing, but if I launch a game or try to update to windows 8.1 it shuts down.

I run the laptop with an extra monitor connect through HDMI, but the problem occurs without the monitor connected as well.

I have opened the case to see if there's any dust (don't see how it would on a new laptop) or something in the way of the fan and nothing is out of the ordinary.

I have contacted Medion and they advised me to send it back to get a replacement. As this will take some I was wondering if there are any troubleshooting steps I can do to resolve the issue instead or if sending it back is my only choice here. Thanks in advance for any help.

the best way to resolve the problem is also the warranty voiding way I believe, it's most likely a heatsink and/or thermal paste problem, I have an XPS laptop at home and the thermal paste is disgustingly smeared on there, covering more than it needs to and therefore endangering other parts of the system, it's common practice among laptop manufacturers.

how far did you open up your case? You should probably check the fan's connectors though I doubt that's the problem since you say the fan itself is spinning.
Other than that, I would suggest opening up everything, unscrew the optical drive, the monitor portion, take out everything until you get to the motherboard, apply better thermal paste (wipe clean the previous) which you can get for maybe 10 bucks online, and re-seat the copper heatsinks properly.

of course, this is risky and you hold the chance of wasting the money you put on the laptop if it fails. if you don't mind waiting for a new one to ship then I would say send it back
