So I built a home server a little while back and I want to put all my dvds on it now so that I can stream them to the TV or any other device on the network. I'm using makemkv to put the dvds on the computer and VLC to play them. I know it's not the most beautiful interface but it is super easy and the quality is not degraded at all. So my question is, what is the best method to stream them to my TV?

I was looking into chromecast which seems pretty good, but would I have to do that from the server? I would greatly prefer to be able to browse from the TV and select the video and then play it, so basically the server just sits in the corner, no monitor or peripherals attached and just interface it via chromecast or other application/hardware? What is the best way to do this?

Also, I would like to be able to stream the video to other computers, or any device on my LAN really. I have a regular all in one router (54 Mb/s I believe) as well as a new N router (~300 Mb/s) that I haven't set up yet. I *could* potentially plug the server into the TV with a wire but I would greatly prefer wireless. What do you think? Thanks.

I can only guide you on your last question, if you really want to keep it wireless, make sure to use the Wireless-N router, some high quality videos will require more than just 54mbps to be properly streamed (I assume your tv has a wireless-N adapter).

I have a 50inch panasonic plasma tv (I'll have to check the model number later when I'm there). I just got a chromecast which works pretty well though my wifi speed is slow since I'm on DSL. I'd like to stream the movies from my server within my lan so that I get good speeds, not over my poor wifi.
