Windows xp will not start.

My windows xp desktop computer. Will not work properly.. When I turn it on, the sony vaio sign is all chopped up.. Then it goes to a different screen that displays a bunch of U's.. You can kind of see what's behind the distortion after a bit.. Anyone know what I can do to fix this?

  1. Restore to factory defaults
If it still has the same problems then the hardware is failing mainly the GPU VRAM is either heating up too much or is going to fail.
Nothing that you can do about it though.
It will need a company service.

I've been trying to restore to factory default. But I cannot seem to see what I am looking at on the screen.. Do you think if I had the windows xp cd that came with it, it might work?
  3. Does it look like this but with the Vaio logo?

If it does; then it is a Ram/Vram problem. However, if you have integrated graphics you could try replacing the system memory.
  4. Try connecting an External monitor to it and see if things are visible.

Yes it looks just like that. I took it into geek squad, and they said it would need a new motherboard and it would cost me more than buying a new one. I honestly am trying to find a good gaming tower for cheap, just to run world of Warcraft..
  6. Ok, if you need any more help on that just gives us a ballpark figure on your budget.

Assuming you mean pounds and feel up to building one yourself: Have a look at this, although this would not include an OS. (You could save a bit of money by using your existing hard drive rather than buying a new one)
