Ok, so this is my PC - http://www.ebay.com/itm/DELL-Optiplex-755-SFF-Desktop-PC-Core-2-Duo-E6550-2-33-2G-160G-DVD-ROM-Windows-7-/180721785835

I want to upgrade from Core 2 Duo 6850, 2 gb ram and HD 5450, to Core 2 Extreme QX9650 or Core 2 Quad Q9650, 8 gb ram and R7 250 Low Profile 1GB GDDR5 or HD 7750 Low Profile 1GB GDDR 5. I want to know if this is possible. Will i have PSU problems and can you recomend stronger one that will fit in that case. Also what type of RAM should i looking for, ddr2 or ddr3 and what speed. And i want to put larger hard drive - 1 TB or 2 TB. What type of hard drive will work in that case.

in theory you just need a psu upgrade to support all these new parts. you need ddr2 for it, 800mhz would work i think, it downclocks automatically anyway. any sata drive will work, problem is you have just 2 connectors, one for the dvd drive and one for the current hdd.

the biggest problem is by the time you buy all the parts you need it ends up cheaper to just buy a new one and in this case you don't have to worry about compatibility issues...

First things first.
PSU is not upgradable on DT and SFF form factors, nothing can be done here. So you have 275 watt PSU.

You motherboard will support the following Quads:

These are the Quads we validated -
N652J 3.00GHz Yorkfield Quad Core Q9650, 12MB this is your best choice
F886J 2.83GHz Yorkfield Quad Core Q9550 12MB, 1333FSB, E0
N650J 2.66GHz Yorkfield Quad Core Q9400, 6MB, 1333FSB, R0
MP627 2.66GHz Kentsfield Quad Core Q6700, 8MB, 1066FSB, G0

Make sure that you have the latest BIOS, and even then it might say that "incomatible processor detected", but the PC will work and much faster - tested by users as well.

You must have copper CPU heatsink, I will provide approximate picture (model numbers are for different Optiplex), on picture below Copper is the one on the right side with green cap:

Also, you have 4 memory DIMMs, each will support 4 GB memory stick, this information tested by users - Patriot Signature 4GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220525 it is expensive here, but I show this as reference only.

Anything else I can help you with?

first thing you need to do is read the dell threads here at toms to see how well upgrades work out in them then go to dell and see what upgrades they offer for it then i'll give you this copy and past read for you to look over .....

some models of store bought computers [dell.hp,acer,ect..] may come with a ''locked'' bios and may not allow you to change certain hardware as a video card.. this is done to protect them from undue warranty claims and refunds .this is not done to hurt you but to protect them. you really need to see if that upgrade has been proven to work in your model first before you invest money in it .. there are a lot of these threads here at toms to look at some models will allow upgrades and some dont.. and a lot of guys here say ya ya ya when is really no no no...it would be sad you spent $200 on a card that wount post after you installed it as most find out. then get told its your psu and you spend more and end up right back where you are now, but its up to you good luck..

you got to know the the boards in these computers are not like the ones we use to do custom builds witch are open to upgrading with in the boards compatibly . the bios is custom made for there design and just for the parts they authorize to be used on there computers

I know for certain that the upgraded version of the build I am currently using works, because I am using it.
The only issue I have to date is the temperature. (Idles at 65 ish)
The question I asked is:

Will the performance heatsink fit in the SFF case or is it reserved for MT cases only?
it's essentially the same board in all 4 computers.

I don't upgrade the gpu because the chipset is enough for my needs (programming and CPU intensive tasks)
(256 megs of vram is perfect)
275w is enough to support the CPU in question, which is the Q9650, 8GB ram and a large enough hard drive.

the problem is the temperature! the problem is the temperature!
I've thought about putting a few extra 50mm fans in the rear of the case to make a current and move the hot air out and bring cool air in.
I am concerned that the stupid machine sounds like it will take off any second.

Every computer, proprietary or not is upgradeable. just gotta know what to get and where to get it for the best price.
and I asked if that heatsink really fits the SFF.
if it does, part# and where to buy from?
