Unreliable Internet Connection

I use Comcast Business Class for the internet connection where I work and it is horribly unreliable. It seems as if the connection drops for a few seconds several times per hour. Talking to someone from Comcast they say that it is very unlikely and probably something within my network. Is there any good way to track what is going on so that I can get the downtime minimized? Experts, I appreciate any help you can provide. Thanks in advance.

I used to have the same issue but I have cox communications but it is also cable. It turned out that I needed to update my router. I had done this twice. The first router was very old (Linksys blue that everyone has had WRT54GL), then I upgraded to the Asus RT-N56U and after only about a year it started to do the same thing dropping signal a few seconds several times per hour, I finally went all out and got the ASUS RT-AC66U and 3years later I'm still happy! I eventually forked out $180 for this bad boy but it's been worth it! I thought it had to be my cable provider with the 2nd router as that wasn't that old yet but it turns out it was. Not 100% sure if that's your issue but it very well may be. Perhaps at least borrow someone's router to see if that fixes anything before spending a lot of cash? Hope this helps! Best of luck to you!

Thanks,

Justin S.

That being said, we have about 25 users. Main reason for internet use is email and sharing of small files. Are there recommendations for a nice stable router? I don't need too many bells and whistles at this point; reliability would be the priority.

Stability of the router is mostly a matter of getting the correct firmware levels. This is very hit and miss since the vendors are not the most helpful when it comes to talking about bugs and patches in their equipment.

Most routers can handle 25 users but 25 users all wireless is about double the recommended. Some routers tend to lock up and do bad things when you get too many. Good ones just tends to run a little slower because there is only so much radio bandwidth to share.

Which router you pick is going to be partially based on the type of connection you have. If you need a router with a modem built in it will cut your choices.

Now can you get this error to occur say on the weekend when you can have only a single user on the network. If you can and you have a separate modem and router I would then repeat this test plugged into the modem directly. This will avoid you buying a new router and it turns out to be the modem or some strange issue with the connection between your modem and the ISP

It is clear you have enterprise level needs. Here is what I use at home:

Like the guy above me mentioned, most routers can handle up to 25 but you are usually best pushing about a dozen per router. If you like the router above, chat with asus about possibly getting 2 of these for your business to make sure it is supported for that level of use. It is the most acclaimed router in terms of performance and with regard to reliability I am a power user and it has served me well for the last 3years non stop. I have about 10 devices stressing it at any given time at full speed without fail. However, I'm not sure if you are a better customer for cisco or hp but I am not a network expert at the enterprise level and sometimes you can get away with much more affordable solutions like I am recommending but I hesitate to give you a 100% vote of confidence for this recommendation as I claim to be no expert in this particular arena. It may save you money and work but please check with someone at ASUS first and do whatever homework you deem fit as well. As a business owner I'm sure you will but sometimes people here can get you overconfident in one direction and I'd hate to contribute to your business negatively even if for a moment. Good luck! Hope this helps!
