how unsecured network hacking happens

i have recently been approached by 2 gentlemen which told me that they knew everything i did on my laptop e.g when i booked a holiday they knew when i booked it for how long how much i paid and everything, im still wondering how they managed to do it and how can i prevent this from happening without setting up a wifi password

set your lan to public in windows network and sharing center and set a decent password for your windows account

this way you make it harder even if they gain access to the wifi.

why don't you want a wpa2 encryption/password?

If your wireless traffic is unencrypted they can easily capture (essentially an in-line snoop and copy of the data being sent/recieved) your packets and look at the data.

Never...ever...use unencrypted wireless, even at home.

Can't agree more. Them looking at what you are doing is the least of your worries. Anyone wanting to do bad things is smart enough to not use their own connection. It is you that will get the visits from the police and can explain to them why it was too much effort to put a password on your connection.

actually i think in some parts of the world you are required by law to have a password set on your wireless network
