I'm building a gaming tower and I have a have a i5 4670 but I'm hung up on a GPU. My monitor can only run 1080x1920 max so I don't need it for higher rez. I want a GPU that can run Ultra with a solid max FPS because I play online shooters. Is the R9 270x too under powered or should I go for the R9 280x?

Or a 780 Ti quad SLI, why not?
Since the OP was asking if it should be R9 270x or R9 280x, why don`t we stick with his price range?

If possible, an R9 280x or GTX 770 would be recommended for good gaming on Ultra.

If your monitor is at 60Hz, than I would recommend a R9 280x or GTX 770 for 60+ FPS at ultra in almost all games (not sure about Crysis 3 - it`s really demanding).

If you`re looking at R9 270x for Ultra 60+ FPS at 1080p, you might be dissapointed.

Sorry for the late reply.
This means that your monitor will need 60 fps in order to give you the best image it can give.
Everything over this will not be displayed, and everything under this will affect the quality of the game. What you want to do is make sure you always have at least 60 fps in your games.

Go for the 280, I have a 270 and I can't run Ultra at 1080p with a stable FPS and the comparison to the 270x is pretty much similar to mines, go for a good 280 and if you're on a budget and can't afford it you can always switch to an AMD CPU.

Agreed with him,

In comparison the GTX 770 is more powerful than the 280x and near the same price range, so I'd go for that.
