So this is my question. For 120 dollars, what would be better, 120gb ssd + cheap 1tb hdd or something like a 1tb wd caviar black? or hybrid?

if you can keep you system files and data separate than ssd + hdd is faster, much faster.

if you're not comfortable with your stuff not being on my documents and desktop than you need a single drive solution. hybrids are faster compared to single black drives but are also more expensive.

if you have just one hdd slot (for example in small laptops) you need a single drive so either hybrid or a wd black2 drive (which is a ssd+hdd in the same interface)

I use a 60GB SSD with a 1TB 7200RPM (I think Hitachi, it's been about 2 yeas so I can't quite remember) just using Intel SRT so the SSD acts as a cache drive. Its' WAY faster than a native 7200RPM drive for my common things.

1. How much capacity do you need?

A SSD for the boot drive and some apps will make everything you do so much quicker, and that would be my choice.
Use a cheap hard drive for storage of large files.
Hard drives all perform about the same and are nowhere close to ssd performance.
Even a WD 10k raptor is not close.

The thing to watch out for with a ssd is to not let it get too full. 90% max, or it will start to lose performance.
I might see if you can't stretch the budget and buy a Samsung 240gb evo and defer on the hard drive until you need the space.

Here's a boot time comparison performed on same box:

Tier 1 SSD - 15.6 seconds (Vertex 3 Max IOPS)....
Tier 1 HD - 21.2 seconds (Seagate Barracuda XT)
Hybrid SSHD - 16.7 seconds (Seagate Hybrid)

On a newer box w/ UFEI boot, Samsung 840 Pros in RAID 0 are slower than all of them....broke the array (samsung's advice) and still not happy (26.7 secs) ....haven't had time to play w/ it tho.

For $120, I'd get the Hybrid. I have two lappies here, one with an SSHD and one with 240 GB SSD and 7200 rpm HD ..... can't tell which is which even running AutoCAD and whatever.

I won't build a box anymore with less than a 120 GB SSD, tired of peeps bringing them back 6 months later asking me to clean them off cause they are full..... even with the 120's.

Of course, to get those HD numbers ya can't use any old HD....the Barracuda XT and the newer 3TB barracuda (30% faster then WD Black) are needed to see that kind of performance.
