Almost anyone I've ever asked says intel makes better processors for applications like gaming, but why is this? Why is a quad-core 3570k @3.4 GHz better than an 8 core FX-8350 @ 4.0 Ghz? does it have to do with 22nm ivy bridge vs 32nm sandy bridge?

Solution
let me ask you this, would you rather have 4 dollars OR 8 cents in your pocket?

That's the reason - "cores" are not the same - different architecture (build). Intel cores are about twice as powerful as the AMD ones. AMD has twice more cores so in theory it should balance out, but the problem is that it is harder for applications to utilize 8 cores simultaneously, so Intel wins out most of the time.

That's the short overview without the technical mumbo-jumbo

AMD CPUs are also more power hungry and hotter, but they do usually have better integrated GPUs.

Which are of no use to anyone except those who can't physically get a discrete graphics card.
