Troubleshooting - Graphics & Audio "skipping"

Hi everyone,

Our tower out in the living room has been experiencing some random "skips", I don't know how to describe them, it's like a few frames of lag/audio distortion, and the whole system will freeze on-screen for those affected frames. This mainly happens when we're playing videos.

First thing I did was make sure the system resources weren't being hogged up, but even after freeing up everything that wasn't essential, it was still happening. I ran ccleaner, defrag, malwarebytes, spybot, combofix; I'm pretty sure it's not any malware related issue, but just to be thorough I did it anyway, but no luck. Next, I checked speedfan and saw that CPU was running fine, around 40°C, but GPU was running a bit hot at 50°C. I dusted everything, especially the GPU (nVidia 550 TI), and reinstalled; same problem. I swapped with my own GPU, same model, and same issue; also, it started running hot as well, at around 50°C after I started playing videos. Finally, I bridged them via SLI (I know it might not help in this application, but I was hoping it would reduce the stress on the cards), but still same issue. I'm beginning to wonder if the issue isn't with the GPUs? Any opinions? It's driving my wife crazy, and her complaining is driving me crazy haha.

CPU: i5-3570K
Mobo: ASRock Z77 Extreme4
RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (4 x 2GB)
PSU: Cooler Master GX - 750W 80+ Bronze

I would suspect a possible issue with you HDD (assuming these video files are saved/stored locally). Are this files on a local hard drive? If so, what make/model is it?

If not stored locally, are the files on a another system/server/NAS?

Has the system always done this?

Make sure that your video drivers are up to date, as well as flash player.

Your temperatures are fine, no worries there. Running video with GPUs in SLI will not help either.

This could also be a network issue. Are you connected to your network via a wired (ethernet) or wireless connection?

Thank you for your quick response!

All drivers up to date, flash player as well, but (sorry I wasn't specific) the videos that are being played are all downloaded. The files are not corrupt, and play fine on my other towers. I tired using WMP, VLC, and WMP classic. I'm pretty sure it's a system issue, as the mouse pointer and whole system freezes up during those frames that it skips.

Thank you! Yes, these files are stored locally on a HDD. I will try adding another HDD tonight and see if video files will still skip. The system has not always done this, so it may actually be that, I'll confirm tonight. Thanks!
