I'm building a new system with an i5 4670K and a single GTX 780, which will require 450W. After two or three years, I plan on getting another 780 for SLI, increasing the power usage to 630W. My question is, is it more economical to get a 850/1000W power supply from the get-go, or settle for a cheaper 600/650W PSU and upgrade once I get the second 780? I'm not sure how much cheaper power supplies will become in the future. Degradation should also be a factor.

If you get a quality 850 now, you wouldn't need to worry about degradation. Get a good Antec, SeaSonic or XFX now and you'll be set :)  Then you don't have to buy a 780 and a $100+ PSU

I'd just go for a good one now. Power supplies don't become obsolete quickly like most other components. A good PSU now will still be a good PSU in 5 years.

NEVER SKIMP ON POWERSUPPLIES.

Would you put a heart bought off the side of a road into your own body?

If you overtap a cheap PSU and it dies, it can bring your entire rig with it. Buy a good PSU (brands listed above are perfect) and you will never have anything to regret. :)

Can you tell I've been burnt before? 2x motherboards and a GFX card over many years of overclocking..

Yes! as the above posters said, you're better off buying a high quality 850W unit now.
